Saturday Tipping - Saturday 17th September, Ayr and Newbury
The showpiece race of Ayr's autumn three day festival is the Ayr Gold Cup, one of the most prestigious sprint handicap races of the flat season with a first prize of £74,000, and it invariably attracts some of the best speedsters in the country. Trainer Dandy Nicholls usually arrives in Scotland mob handed and had five runners last year, including the winner, Redford. This year he has chances with Regal Parade, Tajneed and Evens and Odds, but I’m going to look elsewhere.
Jim Goldie’s Hawkeyethenoo is a tough, consistent sort who finished down the field last year, but has been in good form this year, winning the Victoria Cup at Ascot. Pepper Lane has been a talisman for trainer David O' Meara and completed a hatrick when winning The Great St Wilfred at Thirsk, but has gone up 22lb since the start of his winning sequence. Eton Rifles was impressive when landing a massive gamble under the incomparable K Fallon in the second leg of the Betfair Summer Double.
However, the leading prospect here may be MACS POWER, for the James Fanshawe stable. He has been running well in good quality handicaps this season, and seems to thrive on good ground. He didn't seem to enjoy soft ground in a listed race at Newmarket, but before that ran well behind subsequent narrow Sprint Cup third Hoof It. He is yet to get that slice of luck that is often needed in these big sprint races, and off a decent weight, with the ground possibly in his favour, I am expecting another big win for the successful Fanshawe and Cosgrave partnership.
Aside from Ayr there is an excellent card at Newbury, including the Arc Trial, won last year by the subsequent Breeders Cup Turf winner Dangerous Midge. This tough colt looks to defend his crown, after winning this race in impressive style last year against a good field, including Group One winners Rainbow Peak and Campanologist. His last run was at Meydan in the Sheema Classic where he appeared not to handle the surface and finished last. From his runs last year he sets a good standard, Green Destiny steps up in trip and it is unknown whether he will stay.
Caspar Netcher is a juvenile who has gradually been stepped up in class after a maiden win and a second in a conditions race. From there, he finished second, third and fourth in listed races, including a third to Frederick Engels in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot. A third in a Group 3 race behind current ante post 2000 Guineas favourite Harbour Watch was then topped by a Group 2 win last time out in the Gimcrack Stakes (Group 2) at York. The form was franked from Burwaaz who finished second next time out, and Reply winning the big sales race last weekend for Ballydoyle. As a final plus, that man Fallon is booked.

Midweek Tipping - Sandown, Yarmouth and Ayr
Hopefully we can continue the rich vein of form we’ve hit this autumn, as it has started out tremendously successful with King Torus and Dream Ahead being selected a week last Saturday, before our midweek nap Meeznah romped home, before we managed to find the front two home in the Leger. Let’s hope we can keep up the good work.
Hopefully that can be carried through to Wednesday, where we have nice racing at Beverley, Sandown and
This leads me to believe the fact he has gone to
The best quality race on Wednesday is a Listed Race, open to older horses, and includes a few horses that we’ve already tipped up in previous weeks. This includes the Andrew Balding filly LAY TIME, who ran a respectable fourth in listed company last time out after being narrowly defeated in a handicap, when she really should have won. MIKHAIL GLINKA, now with Gary Moore, was trained by Aidan O' Brien at Ballydoyle when winning the Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot in 2009 and was ante post favourite for the St Leger, so is respected.
The standout however is KING TORUS, from the Richard Hannon stable, which is enjoying another fruitful season. King Torus ran a respectable fourth on his seasonal reappearance after being out for over a year, and then showed tremendous class to win under the guidance of Richard Hughes at Haydock in a similar event. He won with plenty in hand that day, being eased down, and another effort similar should be good enough in what looks, on paper, to be a weaker race than his Haydock one.
A horse that is as tough as old boots is

St Leger Festival Doncaster - Wednesday and Thursday Selections

Wednesday starts off with an interesting card, focused on the older horses, including a listed race, conditions races and a group two race for older fillies and mares.
The Group Two race, the Park Hill Stakes, looks a strong renewal, with recent listed winner Motrice for Seb Sanders and Sir Mark Prescott making a quick turnaround, and the consistent mare of Clive Cox Polly’s Mark providing stiff competition. That being said the best horse on ratings, and the proven stayer is David Lanigan’s star filly MEEZNAH, who bounced back to form in a big way when winning the Lillie Langtry Stakes (Group 3) at the recent Goodwood Festival. Meeznah had the beating of both Motrice and Polly’s Mark that day, and looked an out and out stayer, grinding out a win under Frankie Dettori, who keeps the ride once more. Although she disappointed last time out when finishing seventh in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury, she was giving a stone away to the three year olds, and was never going well, and was very much eased by Frankie. This race looks far easier than the recent group three behind Leger fancies Brown Panther and Census and she can bounce back to form at Doncaster on Wednesday.
three year old career, and coming out on her first start as a four year old, beating decent yardstick Sri Putra, who has form in the book such as finishing second behind Twice Over in an Eclipse, and third behind multiple group one winners Rewilding and So You Think in the St James Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. He was unlucky to finish second behind Passion for Gold in a listed race at Goodwood, when finding little after coming up cruising. Dropped down to 10f from 12f should suit, and given the colt’s pedigree, there could be bags of improvement to come from this son of Cape Cross, and he looks to have some star quality in a fairly modest conditions race.
HAMISH MCGONAGALL is one of the most resilient sprinters in training, and goes for the ever popular Easterby yard when running in the Scarborough Stakes (Class 1) on Wednesday, and looks to have a very strong chance in a competitive listed race. He took a while to get into the swing of things this year, after a promising conditions stakes victory, finishing down the field in two group two races, although not beaten by any greater than 6 lengths. He then finished well in group races in

Saturday Tipping - September 3rd
Saturday sees group one racing at both Leopardstown and Haydock, as we are privileged enough to witness The Irish Champion Stakes as well as the Sprint Cup, both of which are group one calibre races. There is also racing at
The nap this week, in the midst of over 50 races on Saturday, runs in the Group One Matron Stakes, and is dual group one winning filly MISTY FOR ME, for trainer Aidan O’ Brien, who looks to make it back to back victories for the stable, building on last years win by Lillee Langtree. Misty For Me has proven to be a tough and resilient filly, being outpaced in the English 1000
King Torus is a horse tipped up recently, and although unsuccessful, many positives can be taken from his defeat. The colt was having his first run for nearly a year, and although finishing fourth, the margin of defeat was only two lengths. He should have come on a lot for that run, building on the fitness gained from blowing the proverbial cobwebs out, and can make amends in the Superior Mile, which is a listed race, and is the 2.00 at
The final selection this week comes in the highlight of the days racing, in the Betfred Sprint Cup, a group one race, won last year by the Henry Candy trained Markab. Another successful handicapper such as Markab takes the leap into Group One company with Hoof It once again being supplemented by owners Lee Westwood and Chubby Chandler. Doncaster Rover takes a step up from a recent listed, and the field contains consistent horses such as Genki, Elzaam and Masamah to name but a few. However the one to side with is the proven Group One sprinter is DREAM AHEAD, who recaptured his form in emphatic style, winning the Darley July Cup under Hayley Turner, in a confident hands and heels ride. The Group One winning two year old ended the 2010 season as joint top rated two year old with Frankel, who has gone on to be the undisputed best racehorse in the world. Since then, Dream Ahead made a promising return in the St James Palace Stakes, a race which has had its form well and truly franked with Dubawi Gold and Excellebration both winning Group Two races, and Neebras and Frankel also winning next time out. Dream Ahead should be suited at 6f as opposed to his recent 7 furlongs race in

Midweek Talking Turf - Thursday September 1st
Racing on Thursday spread across the country, with racing at Redcar, Salisbury and Newton Abbot, an evening meeting on the all-weather at Kempton Park and a mixed twilight card at Clonmel in Ireland for good measure, and. We shall try and stick to the basics and have a more in depth look at Salisbury and Ripon, making the most of summer flat racing on the turf whilst it is still here.
Starting in the north at Redcar where there seems to be two key betting opportunities, both featuring locally based connections. The first is NEMUSHKA, who was a good winner on debut at Ayr last month beating the consistent Joshua The First. The form looks decent with several running well next time out. Nemushka is the least exposed, and with connections adept at placing horses to advantage he should win, albeit at a favourite’s price.
Another set of connections synonymous with the north are the Easterby family, who could be celebrating another win, this time with veteran RYEDANE. This fellow bounced back to form when slamming his rivals at Hamilton last time out in a tough 6f handicap. Although this race only took place 10 days ago, the form has already been franked with Two Turtle Doves, fourth that day, winning a good Newcastle race earlier this week.
Ryedane runs with a 6lb penalty, but that is offset by apprentice rider Adam Carter’s claim. With the weights due to go up, he is effectively 6lb well in, and providing he doesn’t encounter any traffic problems in running, should be worth sticking with to complete back to back wins Thursday.
We turn our attention south to Salisbury for the remaining two selections. This looks a decent card and and Godolphin have a strong interest in the novice stakes where they saddle likely hot favourite KINGLET, with Frankie Dettori set to ride.. A son of Kingmambo, he was impressive on his debut, winning a 13 runner Newmarket maiden when defeating Most Improved by a short head. Most Improved looks another smart type, who went onto to win another hot Newmarket maiden this week by an impressive five lengths. Kinglet could be a progressive sort, with entries into some big races this autumn, and will be tough to beat here.
